Understanding No Poverty: SDG 1

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 1 — also known as SDG 1 — takes urgent action to end poverty in all its forms everywhere.

This article is a part of the SDG World Tour series. Every month beginning in January 2025, Sustainable Business Guide shares an overview of what an SDG is and a map of Illinois organizations dedicated to that SDG.

What is poverty?

Poverty is a lack of income, education, food, health care, shelter, political inclusion, choice, safety, and dignity.

Understanding SDG 1

Taking urgent action to end poverty in all its forms everywhere is key to making the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Goals – the blueprint for a better future, a reality. Download the infographic, here.

Why is SDG 1 important?

Urgent action to end poverty is important for many reasons.

  1. Lower global mortality rate.
  2. Eradicate deadly and debilitating diseases.
  3. Improve and equalize living conditions for all — especially marginalized groups.
  4. Strengthen and create policy to support the overall wellbeing of all humans.
  5. Unlock human potential.
  6. Allow everyone to live prosperously and productively.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the progress made for achieving SDG 1 was setback by 3 years.

  • 50% of people in poverty are under 18 years old.
  • Research shows that 55% of the world’s population (4 billion people) is unprotected.
  • Over 8% of the world’s population lives in extreme poverty.

Eradicating poverty is not a task of charity, it’s an act of justice and the key to unlocking an enormous human potential. Still, nearly half of the world’s population lives in poverty, and lack of food and clean water is killing thousands every single day of the year. Together, we can feed the hungry, wipe out disease, and give everyone in the world a chance to prosper and live a productive and rich life.

How does goal 1 work and measure success?

SDG 1 is broken down into seven targets as a way to pace and work towards achieving this goal. The UN official graphics are included below and typed out below the image block.

The goal 1 targets:

The following targets are used as smaller and more measurable targets to achieve the overall goal by 2030.

SDG 1 Target 1.1: Eradicating Extreme Poverty

Eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $1.25 a day.

SDG 1 Target 1.2: Reduce Poverty By At Least 50%

Reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women, and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions.

SDG 1 Target 1.3: Implement Social Protection Systems

Implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and by 2030 achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable.

SDG 1 Target 1.4: Equal Rights To Ownership, Basic Services, Technology, And Economic Resources

Ensure that all people, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology, and financial services, including microfinance.

SDG 1 Target 1.5: Build Resilience To Environmental, Economic, and Social Disasters

Build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social, and environmental shocks and disasters.

SDG 1 Target 1.A: Mobilize Resources To Implement Policies To End Poverty

Ensure significant mobilization of resources from a variety of sources, including through enhanced development cooperation, in order to provide adequate and predictable means for developing countries, in particular least developed countries, to implement programs and policies to end poverty in all its dimensions.

This target is sometimes referred to as Target 1.6.

SDG 1 Target 1.B: Create Pro-Poor And Gender-Sensitive Policy Frameworks

Create sound policy frameworks at the national, regional, and international levels, based on pro-poor and gender-sensitive development strategies, to support accelerated investment in poverty eradication actions.

This target is sometimes referred to as Target 1.7.
