Keep in mind,
For more details, read this post. A sustainable gift is also considerate of:
1. Shop Secondhand
Shopping second-hand and finding gently used items is a great way to practice sustainable gifting. Sourcing items secondhand keeps items out of landfills and is a great way to repurpose what already exists.
2. Consider What Materials Are Used
If you can’t find the items secondhand or if you’re unable to access secondhand resources, purchase the gift you’re looking for with consideration of what it’s made of. For example, if you’re purchasing clothes, prioritize garments made of natural fibers instead of spandex and other plastic derivates.
Sustainable materials are a topic priority as well as the durability of the item, and understanding of production.
2. Brand Commitment & Transparency
Being able to easily locate information on the brand’s commitment and the specific product’s impact is another key factor of what makes something sustainable. When purchasing from companies, aim to use your purchasing power to support businesses and brands with a commitment to sustainability and that is transparent about how the company is living out those claims.
3. Longevity
The goal of purchasing something that is rooted in sustainably is to ensure that those things last for more than one use. Items are supposed to be durable and not something that will need to be replaced after a few usages. Ideally, most items (unless intended to) won’t need a re-purchase.
